Leslie & Diana met as young mothers in Lamaze class. We both had 2-year-old boys at home and were adding to the family. We quickly learned that we also shared a yarn passion. So started our friendship, along with the lifelong friendships of our 4 boys.
When the youngest started preschool, we were both looking for part-time jobs. We had some strict criteria: flexibility, part-time hours, and freedom to keep up with the kids’ schedule. There were no jobs that fit those guidelines. So we started our own company, Mountain Colors, in 1992 and we had no trouble finding other moms who were looking for the same things.
We started with 3 yarns and 7 colorways. We chose the business name and decided to keep the mountain theme with our color names. The dyeing started in Diana’s kitchen and took over the laundry room and garage. Three years later, we moved out of the kitchen into our first leased space. We started to slowly build our dye crew, sales rep force, and number of colors and yarns. We quickly learned that designers were a great resource and our Mountain Colors Designs line grew also.

At this stage, we attended our first wholesale trade show in Chicago. It was breathtaking for us to see all the yarns we had ever worked with in one huge convention hall. We met designers that were rock stars to us. We went out of our way downtown so that we could score some Michael Jordan gear for the 4 guys waiting at home. We attended many trade shows in the following years, but the thrill of that first time never left us.
Eventually we couldn’t lease any more space in our building, so we moved to a bigger building. In the summers, our teenage boys and their friends offered their help. We remain in that second building today with an amazing crew of dyers, office workers, and wonderful friends. The products have grown to 18 yarn weights and about 60 colors. We research and keep up with current trends, giving them our own look: Wild Berries (speckle yarn), Perspectives (mini gradient kits), Montana Color Kits (small projects), Fade groups, spinning fiber and Yarn Clubs plus many kits for throws, shawls, and sweaters.
We are amazed and incredibly grateful for the wonderful ride of Mountain Colors. We have danced at all 4 boys’ weddings and celebrated the many joys of grandchildren. There will be a time that the two of us aren’t working in the dye room, but there won’t ever be a time that we tire of working with beautiful yarn.
We would love to have you visit our dye studio in Montana, 45 miles south of Missoula and about 3 miles north of Hamilton.
